I loved writing my own games. There were also manuals that had preprogrammed code in there for you to key out and run. Then you could go back and modify it with your own touches.

In a lot of ways it was better than anything out today in terms of letting you create something.

no, c64's kernal ran BASIC.  there wasn't another OS so you could write programs and play them pretty easily.
