That scene is so brutal. I never understood why his former gang took so much pleasure in it.

Yeah, I never understood that either. In other gangs I could understand it but from what I seen italian mobs were more like families.

Until you wrong them, or rat, then it really boils down to the fact that you're dealing with heartless human beings and that they were really never your friends

This. They are psychopaths. They live by an imaginary code and are horrible people.

If you remember the line from Goodfellas, something like 'Your murderers come as friends, with smiles and when you're most in need of their help.'

Also, I took it as a vision of Nicky going to Hell. Like that is his worst Hell, watching his best friends beat his brother to death and put him into a shallow grave. The idea of your best friend, who knows all of your sins and fears, becoming your tormentor in Hell is really scary.

Plus, if you recall in the movie, Frankie was serving as the middle man between Nicky and the old bosses. Nicky's behavior was making Frankie and everyone else afraid they were going to get whacked. Frankie was already lying to Remo to protect Nicky, and the bosses had started whacking anyone involved in the Tangiers.

They were happy to kill Nicky, and Nicky had been more than happy to risk their lives when seeking his own power and fortune.

This plus Nicky had always acted like an asshole bully that deep down inside everyone wanted to kick his ass but were afraid to. You hear Frankie say "real tough guys, your brother and you." like he'd been wanting to do that for the longest time.

In real life Tony Spilotro was also a giant asshole.  He hung out at the same bar as my dad.  He said people felt bad for his brother, but he also said his own mother probably didn't cry for that prick.  I'm sure his crew probably didn't love him either

Heh, I have a similar story. My Mom lived in a town house on the same street as a Spilotro. She said the family(which was big) were all sweet, nice people. Except Tony.

Tony was scary enough that they had him clip Mad Sam Destefano. Mad Sam is like a comic book villain he was such a psycho.

I'm pretty sure Delta Directional and Crossfire are the 2 business that have this OGer problem.
