I wonder if the people who are against this purchase would also be against the purchase of Alaska way back when?

(or if they even knew or thought about it)

i wonder if Russia would have a do-over on that one lol

alaska only accounts for 20% of the USA gdp.

I wonder how much oil / gas / metals are under Greenland.

Alaska's oil and gas industry has produced more than 17 billion barrels of oiland six billion cubic feet of natural gas, accounting for an average of 20 percent of the entire nation's domestic production (1980 - 2000).

This is a fair point...

Everybody thought the Louisiana Purchase and the Alaska purchase were retarded.

The Alaska Purchase was called "Seward's Folly"

https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/sewards-folly

https://www.history.com/news/why-the-purchase-of-alaska-was-far-from-folly

I seriously just learned a lot . Thank you

You're welcome bro.

That's what the OG is for.

The more you know...

If it’s such a dumb purchase ..: why then does Denmark say it’s not for sale at any price?

i don’t know much about it

but when one guy wants to buy and the other won’t sell at any price.

I would guess that there is some value in it

100mill in 1946 couldn't do it.  so maybe 3trillion would make them blink.

Greenland is 23 trillion sq ft.

So even at a buck a foot it’s $23T

Way cheaper to just invade Denmark.  Might as well take all of Scandinavia and secure a nothern foothold in Europe while were at it

Who the fuck would pay a buck a foot for Greenland? Most of the land is probably worth 200/acre. That's less than half a cent per foot.

Even with the resources I cannot see paying more than 500 billion.

Maybe it holds sentimental value for Denmark?

Plus, they - like most European countries now - don't want Americans any closer than they are now.

So we're only 22 Trillion in debt and we haven't even started funding or building the wall or our Space Force yet so maybe a little extra on the countries credit card should be alright.

We may also want to cut back on those Billions we keep giving to the farmers for the bleeding because of the tariffs but that's ok. As long as the Tea Party and their fiscal watch dogs approve I guess it makes financial sense.

Why do you hate farmers?

Wrong

it’s stretgic and holds a shit ton of resources. Same as Alaska (why wouldn’t it?)

denmark wants to keep it just as much as another country would want it

but the trump haters (yes that’s you) automatically think it’s a terrible idea

I have no clue what it would be worth

but for anyone to criticize it, Without knowing any details, just proves that TDS is real

At least we'd have a real asset to show for our increased national debt.

It's almost always smart to buy land, over the long term.  Besides, that island will be thawing out in no time according Al Gore.

With his love of destroying national parks and general disregard for the environment I don't see how this could go wrong

Would be hilarious if it ends up being a "Trump's Folly" situation where everyone assumes he is a fucking idiot and 20 years down the road is the greatest discovery of [insert oil, gas, mineral, rare earth elements, etc.] on earth.

I swear, sometimes I think we have Chauncey Gardiner in the White House:

"Life is a state of mind."

"I like to watch [television]."

"This is just like television, only you can see much further."

"As long as the roots are not severed, all is well. And all will be well in the garden."

"In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter. And then we get spring and summer again."

"Yes! There will be growth in the spring!"

LOL, WHAT?

Alaska's gross GDP for the four quarters ending with first quarter of 2019 was $54.585 billion. US GDP for that time period was $21.060 trillion.

Alaska accounts for 0.26% of US GDP. Where the fuck did you get 20% from?

Give 'em each a million bucks to bugger off, they'll take it.

That would only cost... hmmm... 50 billion dollars.

That's like a month of the Iraq War.

not a dumb purchase but a dumb statement.  it is a big nothing burger and that the bar is so low that people get distracted by the stupidest shit.

it would be more realistic to say he was mining an asteroid or putting a base on the moon.
