WASHINGTON — One of the world’s largest U.S.-based makers of consumer products says it has been told by the White House to stop exporting medical-grade face masks to the Canadian market.

Minnesota-based 3M says the Trump administration has asked that it stop sending N95 respirator masks to export markets in Canada and Latin America.

But the company, which calls itself a critical supplier of the masks to both markets, says there would be “significant humanitarian implications” to doing so.

It also says such a move would likely prompt retaliatory measures, ultimately resulting in fewer facial respirators being available in the United States.

3M says it has already been turning out as many of the N95 masks as possible for the U.S. market.

The company was singled out for criticism Thursday by President Donald Trump, who has invoked the Defense Production Act to compel 3M to prioritize the American market for its masks.

The act, which was passed in 1950, grants the president the power to expand industrial production of key materials or products for national security and other reasons.

3M responded hours later with a statement, saying early Friday that it has increased production of respirator masks significantly and was already working with the administration to prioritize orders from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The latest actions offer a framework to “expand even further the work we are doing in response to the global pandemic crisis,” 3M said.

“We’ve been in constant discussions” with the administration, 3M Chief Executive Officer Mike Roman said Friday on CNBC. “The narrative that we aren’t doing everything we can as a company is just not true.”

The company has ramped up production to 100 million masks a month, about 35 million of which are produced in the U.S.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said at a Thursday news conference that the administration has had concerns about whether the company’s production around the world is being delivered to the U.S.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he has been in touch with the White House about supposed price gouging by resellers of 3M masks and accused the company of not doing enough to ensure they end up in the hands of medical professionals.

3M has previously said it hasn’t changed the prices it charges and can’t control the prices dealers or retailers charge for their products.

This report by The Canadian Press, with files from Bloomberg News, was first published April 3, 2020.

trump should order them to. Every single mask for USA first, then help others.

I’m quite Disappointed in him on this issue.

Remember when everyone wanted Trump to use DPA?

Well, this is one of the powers he has with it.

He can compel American companies to supply American needs.

And im sure if Moose Piss helped with a virus, your dear leader would be telling the Moose Piss exporters to stop as well.

Theyre playing shell games and letting their distributors sell abroad for more than they can domestically, but Trump is no sucker or sellout like the dems.

I use ladies underpants as masks when I go out in public.

They appear to be 100% effective against the chinese virus.

This fucking guy can’t win. He’s first criticized for withholding/inability to acquire supplies and now he’s criticized for trying to acquire inventory. I’m not a trump supporter but it’s painfully apparent that ppl just want to blame someone.

Apparently 3M is also selling a bunch of masks to overseas countries.  Fuck them.

And if resellers can't be trusted to not price gouge, 3M should bypass them and start selling directly to those who need them, and they should also provide as many dust masks as possible to the govt so the local states and cities that are forcing people to wear face masks can send the masks to the citizens.

3M saying they can't control prices but they are shipping pallets to authorized resellers and dealers who are price-gouging like crazy.

Fuuuuck off, 3M.

THis sounds terrible, but then you read about the guys from FLorida saying they can't even get their hands on any masks. So I don't know. We'll see how it plays out in the next few days.

seems reasonable where this is possible for us based operations but i would imagine 3m based produciton plant countries would also have similar legislation in place.

But 3M warns that ceasing those exports could cause blowback.

"Ceasing all export of respirators produced in the United States would likely cause other countries to retaliate and do the same, as some have already done. If that were to occur, the net number of respirators being made available to the United States would actually decrease. That is the opposite of what we and the Administration, on behalf of the American people, both seek."
