US President Donald Trump is disputing that nearly 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico after the island was hit by two hurricanes in September 2017.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico," Mr Trump wrote on Twitter as a category two hurricane barreled towards the US.

He added that Democrats had inflated the official death toll to "make me look as bad as possible".

The official figure was released last month after an independent study.

3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000...

.....This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico. If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list. Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!

TLDR: Trump thinks death toll for Puerto Rico was made up by democrats.

So lets hear your particular issues with the study.

What did they do incorrectly?

How so?

Trump went conspiritard when faced with truth that he doesn't like.

That is not a Republican vs Democrat thing. That is our President being incapable of accepting reality.

It all depends on how you want to break the data down.

If you mean people who were directly killed by the hurricane (flying debris, drowning in the water, etc) then Trump is right. If you are counting the deaths of people who died months and months after the hurricane, then he's not.

Seems pretty clear that the POTUS' tweets were trying to turn that study into a partisan thing.

Seems OP just wanted to make it a "Trump is a cTard who cant accept any criticism" thing.

But of course Jack Carter and all the other sheep will blindly follow Trump's lead on this. Must be a fake study. Trump is the greatest at disaster relief. All his friends say he is the bigliest relief aid master.

Anyone being rational knows that the actual issue/topic is how we as a nation helped. So counting only the deaths from the hurricane (nothing we could have done to stop/prevent that) is as disingenuous and idiotic as it gets. (Not calling you those things)

Ok this is pretty weird....

“The island government raised the official death toll to 2,975 on Tuesday after maintaining for months that 64 people had died as a result of the storm.

But the higher figure, based on the findings of researchers from George Washington University in a study commissioned by the US commonwealth's government, is only an approximation, not a concrete list of names, according to Gov. Ricardo Rossello.

"This number can change," Rossello said. "It could be less, it could be more, as time passes."

What did they do incorrectly?

For one they included any natural deaths like heart attacks storm related, they also included carbon monoxide poisoning a suicide and a person ran over by his own vehicle.

They then made the random number 4,645 a political rallying cry.

Then a count that started at 16 then 34 then 499 became 1006-1272 by a medical journal estimation.

Now that the dust has settled and people have forgotten what a cluster fuck PR government is the number is a trillion million billion because its being used once again to bash Trump.

Who knows what the real number is.

Anyone who ignores what a giant mess PR government and infrastructure is only cares about using a natural disaster as another tool in their war chest against Trump.

Where do you draw the line?

If someone dies today because the hospitals are STILL in a state of disrepair, would you attribute that death to the hurricane death toll? Some would, and some wouldn't.

So you didn't read the study, eh?

All deaths are included but then a trended number is removed to account for natural trends of fatalities in PR. It also accounted for people leaving the island.

You can't ever have an exact number or a list of names from a natural disaster of that scale. You need to take a look at mortality rates historically and then have an observation period and develop a delta.

This are pretty accepted and sound analytical methods.

Just another example of people arguing over something as asinine as a hurricane death total (which we should all be morose about) because of their political team
