getting frozen without knowing why sucks
why not sent a private message to let the user know why ?
That's a great question. I have been a mod here for over 20 years now. In the vast, vast, vast, vast majority of cases, people don' tthink they did anything wrong, so it just engenders more argumentation. "Other people do worse ALL the time" is a real common one. I have tried it, but concluded there are not enough hours in day, unfortunately.
Kirik- A part of my frustrations was based on the terrible mod tools we had.
Behind the curtains on the mod group I'd say about a third of our threads were some version of "______ wants to know why he was frozen, nothing in the log, who did it?"
One of the things that really started to fester with me was the absolute lack of accountability amongst the mods. There was a small group of us that really tried to sign our work every time and in addition we'd send PMs explaining the action. I always respected the way Rick would let you know he killed a post. As I mod I found out quickly just how much of a pain in the ass it was.
You and I chatted once about deciding not to incorporate the mod panel in the app due to cost, which I understood. But it added yet another layer of barrier to moderation. When the world started doing everything on their phone instead of their desktop the majority of mods (known and unknown) really stopped doing much besides just being users of the forum. Used to drive me nuts when a consistent 3 or 4 folks would constantly post in the mod group "can someone do something about ____ thread, away from my computer right now". We're ALL away from a computer right now, it's 10 at night! Me or Hughes or menchen or sagiv would then go through the 37 steps necessary to deal with the offense using our phones. But this is apparently too much effort for a few of your highly respected mods.
You have far too many mods, most of which do literally nothing beyond pointing at a problem and saying "somebody out to do something about that" and a system and culture that doesn't support any sense of accountability.
De-mod everyone and start over.
Make every mod do what you and Steph told me to do in the beginning and make it policy that ALL mods post in red.
Make the team accountable for their actions.
Create a script that won't allow one to complete a mod action without entering a justification and auto signature that event.
Re-red Hughes, mench, and myself and leave us out of the bullshit. We were your most active mods, we quietly did the work.
I was intentionally out front and probably too transparent with my actions because I thought the members deserved to see how the sausage gets made. I still believe that's the way to do it and I believe that the users of this site agreed.
Bring back the Disbeliever school of "smells like a recycle, ban immediately".
We are drowning in an outhouse of 5 or 6 guys with multiples that simply won't go away.
Brand new blue shouldn't be automatically approved, and we shouldn't sweat killing those brand new accts. That has always been the troll road to a new acct.
New accts should be post limited. Say, 5 a day, and not allowed to start more than 1 thread per day for 3-6 months. That right there would derail 75% of the garbage that drove off customers in the first place.
And finally, spellcheck your articles!!!!! Several of us volunteered to proof your copy before you posted but you always go freebird and post up shit that was embarrassingly difficult to defend. Your revenue stream is dependent upon these articles, it would be worth it to you to stipend a few mods to preform this function.
