I keep seeing this repeated but no one wants to mention the difference. There problem with coronavirus is it's killing young healthy folks whereas the deaths from flu are usually the elderly or people with immune systems already compromised.

US influenza:

13,000,000 cases

180,000 hospitalizations

10,000 deaths

US influenza:

13,000,000 - 10,000 deaths = 12,990,000 recoveries

Deaths / Recovery ratio = 1 death / 1,299 recoveries

Coronavirus:

909 deaths / 3,322 recoveries

Death / Recovery ratio = 1 death / 3.65 recoveries

Do you see why this is a bigger deal than the flu?

That's a great way to frame it.

The ratio is dropping quickly, though.  It was over 50% as of Thursday last week. Probably because of the natural lag in determining that a person has recovered.  Hopefully it keeps dropping.

Yep, I remember seeing it as 300 / 300 once so it's good to see it shifting, but people thinking it's hardly anything to worry about are being naive. There's cities shut down, chemicals being sprayed everywhere, people unable to leave their homes and it's being compared to flu? It's absurd.

those numbers are a model, not real numbers, China has 400 million people in lockdown, just for a few deaths and infections? think about it.

Numbers aren't statistically sihnificant or even reliable yet

Chinas government lies/ obfuscates

But what we know so far makes it a scary scenario

909 deaths in china which has some of the worst poverty in the world, slave labor, horrible health standards with food, horrible health standards for hostipitals, and so on. Again all of these deaths are in China or shortly after they left China.

They are putting all the sick people together. Just imagine if every person in America with the flu was put into a room full of people with the flu. You are trying to compare Chinese health standards to American health standards. Clearly if the American flu was treated the same way Chinese treats the coronavirus then the flu deaths would be astronomical. There is already far more flu deaths and that is with far better healthcare.

Now take out the chinese deaths and just all the other cases worldwide and how many deaths has there been for this coronavirus?

There is no vaccination for Coronvirus, it's a relatively different strain new to the human body when exposed to it so the immune system is unable to fight it.

If you take the common flu and introduce it to some rare tribe living off the grid it would wipe them out.

Im not saying it's not dangerous, I'm just expressing the numbers relative to a pandemic. I remember when SARS was going to wipe us all out, we adapt and move on.

For the people who keep pointing out that China's numbers aren't trustworthy, keep in mind that there is now a significant number of infections of people outside China, and in those countries (whose numbers China can't control) they are faring much better than those in China and they have a much lower fatality rate.  Much lower.  If China were adjusting their numbers to make it look better you'd think we'd see higher death rates outside of China.  Just a thought.

Nobody from China enters the US until this thing is controlled, unfortunately this includes US citizens.

The flu has a death rate of about 0.1%.  The coronavirus has a death rate of about 2.2% but probably will be closer to 5% once it plays out.

This means that the coronavirus is going to be more dangerous than the Spanish flu.
