Mediagenic women's flyweight Paige VanZant chose to fight out her contract on Saturday night, and is now testing free agency.
“I’m excited. I’ve never been in this position ever, so I think it’s an important position for me to be in,” said VanZant before UFC 251. “You don’t really know your value until somebody else tells you what it is, and it’s the option of multiple people that say what they think my value is. So I’m going to gain a lot of knowledge.”
PVZ has 2.6 million followers on Instagram, appeared on Dancing with the Stars, and saw her autobiography published. Her appeal is part toughness, part skill, and in no small part is because of her looks. When looking at the odds for UFC 251, one of them was not like the others - no fighter faced odds over +200, except for PVZ at longer than +500. So now Paige VanZant is 2-4 her last six fights, and has fought just five times in the last four years.
At the UFC 251 post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White was asked if he wants PVZ's next fight to be in the UFC?
“I like Paige,” replied White. “I like Paige. It’s like Blaydes – when Blaydes fought. When you talk all that stuff, ‘I’m not getting paid enough,’ and fighting inconsistently, one time in the last year, and then get smoked in the first round of the fight, she should definitely test free agency.”
