#11 ranked UFC welterweight Geoff Neal is on a seven-fight win streak, the last five in the UFC. In his last fight, he TKO'd Mike Perry, and in the fight before that, he TKO'd Niko Price winning a $50,000 performance bonus. "Handz of Steel" was scheduled to fight Neil Magny at UFC on ESPN+ 33 on August 29 at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV, but he almost died; the fight is off.

"These past few week have been crazy, and that's putting it lightly," wrote Neal on his social network. "It's really hard to try to find an eloquent way to say 'I almost died.' So screw it.. I almost died. ... This really put a lot of things into perspective for me. Never did I ever think I would be hooked up to a dialysis machine before my 30s. Everything was going well for me. Was training every day, making money at work, just signed a contract for a huge fight, then BOOM, life hit me with a check hook. I'm just glad to be home after having to spend 1 week in the ICU. Stay healthy out there y'all and listen to your body at all times."

Magny will now fight Robbie Lawler at UFC on ESPN+ 33.

Man that sucks, I love that dude. Great guy, and when he was working at that restaurant still, was so upbeat even though he was a little celebrity in there.

What is a check hook?

It's when you kick some one with your elbow

Would rhabdomyolysis from overtraining put you on dialysis? Just speculating but maybe that is the cause?

So many different things could put you into renal failure and temporary hemodialysis.
im sure more info will be out.  Tough guy, looking forward to his next fight.

What is a check hook?

It's a left hook combined with a clockwise rotation on the left (lead foot).

As your opponent throws a right, you simultaneously hit him with a left hook and pivot out of the way of the oncoming right. Afterward:

A) you've hit him

B) he's missed you

C) he's facing the wrong direction

D) You're in a position to pulverize his chin with a right cross

No news source seems to be able to report what the medical issue was.

"Space herpes" is my guess.

I did. That information was not available when it was written, at least as far as I could find out.

I randomy guess it could be weight cutting, but that's based on nothing, really.

Lighten up Francis. I assumed it was yet another typo in the article and that they actually meant left hook.

That was my initial thought, remembering how Cormier had kidney failure after cutting weight for the Olympics. Geoff Neal was more than 3 weeks out from his fight, though, so I'm guessing there was some other issue that made him need dialysis.

Yes, I've had Rhabdo from overtraining and if it's bad enough, you go on dialysis.

From MMAMania:

“For two days, we didn’t know if he was gonna make it,” coach Sayif Saud told ESPN. “He went to the emergency room on Sunday, he was septic by the time he got there. I spoke to the nurse and she says, ‘We need to take him to ICU right now, he’s in critical condition.’ That’s when my heart really sank. They said his white blood cell count was 20,000, when it’s supposed to be 12,000. His body was fighting something, but they didn’t know what it was. They still don’t.”

Neal tested negative for coronavirus.
