It really was. It was a different game back then.

True story, Guy was very well rounded for back in those days and is underrated. I still remember his fight with Sak and believing he got robbed, then Ken Shamrock wouldn’t let him continue, lol.

Tito's striking went downhill the further he went in his career..

Looking back on this fight, I was suprised at Tito's striking..

He got worse

Agree about Titos striking. He wasn't as flinchy or uncomfortable trading leather. Also way more loose. Maybe all the surgeries made him more stiff and stuck in the mud as time went on.

I almost don’t hate that version of buffer.

It's a shame Guy had that stroke and we never got a 3rd fight.

Tito doesn't get enough credit. Dude fought for free. I think Mezger tapped and I also think they should have started back in the same position before John came in to get the cut checked. That said, the fight game was still raw then, do i reason with expectation management. Legendary fight tho.

I think Tito lost a little something when he tried to become more technical.

Young brawling Tito was willing to throw down.
Refined Tito was stiff and gun shy.

He had two spinal fusions IIRC.  I just had one in August and judging by how stiff it feels, no wonder he looked so bad after....

This..i always found it bizarre how loose and effective Titos hands were early on but then he got worse somehow..

This fight should not have been started back on the feet..Mezger was stuck and was taking a pounding..as we saw in the rematch, Tito was much superior fighter

Why was Mezger only wearing 1 Mma glove? Lol

He used to be WAY scrappier, may have been on more juice combined with younger age? The traps dont lie! He used to be AGGRESSIVE.

Also, this video really highlights how different a fight is with knees on the ground, and how raw fighting used to be. I dont remember Mezger pulling a Jimmerson in this fight lol

This. Plain and simple. Also, his hands looked better in a time when the overall level of strikers in mma was significantly lower. Especially strikers well rounded enough to not be paralyzed with fear of being taken down.

John McCarthy was such a douchebag of a ref. He paused the fight in a clear advantageous position for Ortiz.

Shouldn't the fight have been restarted in the same position?

They didn't have a rule for that at the time. This fight was one reason that rule was implemented later on.

Absolutely. Mezger deserved that win.

He deserved the win because he was more well rounded? Lmao. He got starched and McCarthy saves him.
