Love how he instinctively nullifies his opponents free leg for just enough time to prevent the roll. Super impressive, especially no-gi.

Not really sure what a “good wrestler” or a “top heavy grappler” would have done there. He just pulled guard.  Garry is the most dangerous grappler in mma right now.

Watch it closely. Nakahara tried to get out of the ashi garami by leaping away. He even got on his hands and tried crawling away. It’s the exact wrong reaction.

The proper response to ashi is to stay heavy on top and drive into your opponent. Get heavy on your captured leg, don’t try to pull it out. Get an upper body control and work to clear or squash the reap.

The only way to develop these instincts is to train with leg lockers.

Lol this.

This place has really gone to the dumps when you had to break it down like that.

This is not entirely correct. Turning away is perfectly acceptable provided you put your free leg on his ass to use as leverage to remove your trapped leg. Trying to just pull it out like he did only works against scrubs. What actually did him in was allowing Garry to roll all the way through. Although at that point he was running out of real estate and didn't have much choice.

Tonon pulled ashi garami from the single leg. His opponent did exactly the wrong thing by trying to run away, and the heel hook was there for the taking.

Definitely shows Gary's killer instinct and ability to capitalize on mistakes on the ground. But pulling guard like that won't be an advisable strategy against the top-heavy wrestlers and more savvy grapplers in the UFC.

People keep saying this. Palhares did this at a high level. And tonons leg lock game is light years ahead of his.

Ryan hall has success in the UFC. And Hall's leg game is nowhere near tonons.

We will see

just ran a leg lock train on a second degree judo BB in One Championship.

Hes a bad man!

Second degree black belt in judo doesn't mean much, to be honest. Also there are no leg locks in judo.

Was gonna say the same

Love Tonon - guy is amazing and when I’ve met him the coolest nicest guy you’ll meet...now that he has five fights under his belt I’d love to see him step up the competition a little...but I hope he takes a long enough break to heal up...even though he hasn’t taken any damage the camps and cuts are a lot
