UnderGround Forums I’ll fix the weight division problem

My first post in years. And probably my last.

Here you go. Drop the 125 lb weight claaa, add 165, move 170 to 175, and 185 to 190. While you're at it, drop the 265 lb heavyweight weight limit. Size has diminishing returns at some point.

135
145
155
165
175
190
205
206+

One of the major issues with adding a weight class is "The UFC doesn't want more champions that they have to pay a % of the PPV revenue to." So get rid of the 125 lb class, and they'll still have the same number of champions/belts.

Another issue is "it will water down the 155 and 170 lb divisions". How so? The UFC has more guys under contract at 155 and 170 than all the other weight classes combined. It needs to be thinned out. Plus heavyweight is thin, so adding the 3-5 superheavyweight fighters who can compete at the level helps there.

Adding 165 and changing 170 to 175 and 185 to 190 would allow more guys to cut less weight and be able to fight closer to their natural weights. The jumps from 155 to 170, and 170 to 185 are just too much.

You're welcome

Weight cutting is a bigger issue than weight divisions, but regardless they should each be separated by 10lbs.

No matter what they do with weight classes there will always be guys like max holloway for example who are mentally weak and need to be the bigger man and cut crazy amount of weight.. this is the problem with so many guys..max is the same natural size as gsp. This kind of thinking well always be there

I like that model.

Please none of you morons start bringing up a 230 weight class either, 205 and HW are barren as is.

Yes, this is exactly what they should do.  If they want to expand on these even more, they can implement ONE's weight cutting rules and force everyone to move up 1 weight class, until you get to middleweight (Those guys are getting a higher limit in this set).

Agree with everything except maybe the 265 limit. I just worry you would see the "Tim Sylvia effect" happen to guys that cut to 265. I don't particularly want to see sloppy 350lb guys fight for 2 mins before near death from exhaustion.

As much fun as it would have been to see a 300lb Brock in his prime, there are not many guys that have that build to justify 265 +.

In regards to the 265 lb limit, maybe up it to 285 (to match international wrestling's limits)?

As far as removing it entirely, in the unified rules weight classes, isn't there also a superheavyweight class with no weight limit? The UFC doesn't have fights in it, but it's there already.

You know Sean, I like the cut of your jib.  This seems like a pretty good plan and very similar to how I've been looking at the issue lately.  I don't know about getting rid of the heavyweight limit, though.  That seems like it could be problematic at times.  Maybe just raising it a bit or something.  The only other thing I could maybe prefer over this would be keeping 185 and adding a 195 so we have ten pound jumps consistantly up to 205.  Maybe there wouldn't be enought guys at the top end around 195 and 205 to have deep divisions, but I think its would be very consistent and easy to understand for everyone.

Middleweight and Light Heavy are already spread pretty thin. 195 would be overkill.

I support this just for the hilarious weigh in stare downs that will result.  Also, the one time a 135 figher somehow catches some heavy weight and KO's him would be a thing a legend.

This is actually pretty good...

fuck a cruiser weight or a 195.  LHW and HW are paper thin.  Size does have diminishing returns.  Maybe dropping the HW limit would bring in some new contenders.
