No one is ever the same after a beating like that. JDS was never the same after the Cain fights. Sure he won a few more but he wasn’t the fearless striker that got him the belt. Calvin is as dangerous as they come in that division and Max made him look like he had no business in there.
I hate to say it because kattar is one of my favourites, but I'll be very surprised if he comes back to where he was prior to this fight.
Max is not a big puncher but when your getting hit that many times, it can't be good for your health.

After taking off about 2 years. I think the problem comes from taking a beating and then having a series of fights every 3-6 months after. The guy never has time to recover because they all train like retards.
