Used to hang with him in Vegas sometimes. Really nice guy

However gave up a good thing by chasing everything else. Instead of building up his school, and expanding while mma was getting huge, and focusing on what he was good at, he wanted to be a club promoter, and actor, and singer, etc...

OG

He became famous in BJJ back in 1997 or 1998 when he beat BJJ Black Belt Claudio Franca in a great match. He put Americans on the map for sure. Brazilians thought they were invincible and they even called him a Fake Black Belt until he shut all the Brazilians up by beating a games Franca. I was there

He was a Black belt under Lebell and blue belt under the Gracie's when he fought Carlson Jr to a draw in Extreme Fighting back in 1995 He also had a black belt in Japanese Kickboxing and Japanese Jiu Jitsu(not sure of JJJ style). I'm pretty sure he went straight from blue to black belt skipping purple and brown by Pedernaris. By the way he now has a Master of Grappling rank under Lebell for what it's worth.

Super cool guy and true pioneer of this sport. Also, I believe that he may have pioneered wearing boxer briefs in the octagon.

Trained at his school mid 90's, very good instructor, always had guest instructors in from all over.  I was able to do privates with Andre.  A who's who of MMA was through the doors all the time.

Watching him to privates with Marc Laimon when he was a purple was bad ass.

I read that to and still trying to figure out does that mean his grappling system or Judo? He has been teaching Judo since the 50's so I'm sure he's awarded Black belts before that in Judo at least.

I heard many times that he was a fake BJJ blackbelt. But I didn’t know about him beating Franca.

It was Gene's system that incorporated Judo and Catch wrestling

He always seemed to be a fixture in the older NHB orgs, and one of the first Americans I remember with legit BJJ credentials before Americans with legit BJJ credentials was a thing.

Was surprised to look up his record to remember that he was 3-4.

I remembered him as having potential,  but as soon as he was here, he was gone.

Yeah John lost to him by KO.

Back in Hawaii he and Kimo had fought each other if I remember correctly.

He and Rumina Sato split a pair of wins.
