The sport is kind of moving away from sparring that hard, but that is 100% normal. I can't even begin to guess the number of times I've been knocked down in sparring, and I am no kind of high-level guy.

Different culture MMA vs Boxing when it comes to talking about what happens in training.

Just a different training culture in general.

would it be fair to say shots that knock you down in sparring wouldn't necessarily knock you down in a fight?

different rhythm intensity etc.

If that's normal, so will be the brain damage that comes with it.

It's often a shot you don't see in both cases. Headgear is great for stopping cuts, but I never felt it really reduced impact, that I could tell, and it makes it harder to see incoming shots sometimes.

That wasn't a knock down. He was knocked out.

Hope that wasn't done too close to a fight.

I get that there has to be some hard sparring, but MMA is different than boxing...
