How Odds Work

Unlike a spread on an NFL game where one team is getting a certain amount of points (ex. Saints +7), in MMA fights the line on the game is called a moneyline. These are the +/- used on UFC broadcasts. The figure is how much money you have to bet in order to win $100 (-), and how much a $100 bet will earn (+). They are perhaps best explained via example:

STEFAN STRUVE +112
BEN ROTHWELL -142

In this fight, Big Ben is the -142 favorite, meaning if you bet $142 on him and he wins, you would profit $100. If he were to lose though, you would lose the full $142.

If you were to bet on Skyscraper at +112, if you bet $100 on him and he wins the fight, you will profit $112. If he were to lose the fight, you would lose your original $100 bet.

Depending on how people are betting on the fights the odds will shift from the moment they open, right up until the night of the fights.

The sport is built on moments that make you involuntary think “HOLY F***ING S***!!!” Those can come at any time, on any portion of the card, from any fighter. Thus, some bettors look to the underdogs, sometimes big ones, as the best bets.

And some say never bet until you've watched the weigh-ins.

Calvillo should be the favourite... Stamann and Alves are very live dogs with good value.  Wish I still bet on MMA fights :/

Every single fight is actually a pretty decent match up, I feel there's going to be a lot of evenly-matched fights this weekend.

How about Wiman? I think its his second fight back but he used to be a solid fighter. Problem is i know nothing about Solecki. Font over Simon seems like a good get.

Another way to look at the odds in your example under "How Odds Work" is to compare identical bets on the favorite and underdog.

So, if you bet $100 on Rothwell as a -142 favorite, you would win $70 if he wins.

As you point out, the same size bet on Struve would win you $112 if he wins.

Joe Solecki got his start with My promotion as a color commentator, had his first ammy fight with us then dedicated himself to MMA, if this fight goes to the ground Solecki will destroy him and make it look easy.

The easiest odds converter I've found is at: https://www.covers.com/editorial/HowToBet/OddsConverter .

Just enter the "moneyline" odds in the first box, hit Tab, and it shows you all the stuff like what a $100 bet will pay, what the implied probability is, etc.

Side note, FWIW: In the US, it's becoming increasingly easier for bettors to wager online without the risks and hassles of dealing with offshore bookmakers. In October the combined action of online wagering in Nevada and New Jersey passed $1 Billion for the first time. Somewhat surprising: New Jersey's online wagering has overtaken Nevada's, at least temporarily.

Online sports betting in the US is set to explode in the next few years.

A few old school fighters in there. Should be fun.

It's always interesting to watch Overeem fights. Sometimes, he looks like the best heavyweight in the world. Other times, the slightest jab could "boop!" him on the chin for a knockdown.

First off, I didn't even realize Rothwell and Struve were fighting, that's a fun fight. And Handsome Matt is back for another go?? I'll watch.

Money to be made on JR? Will we see Econo Reem pick him apart? Will his chin hold up?

Good card for a free ESPN card. Could do without the chick fights, but I could always use a joint break.

How Odds Work:

if it says - that’s the favorite.  Example -150. You have to put down $150 bucks to win $100.

if it says + that’s the underdog. Example +150.  If you put down $100 you win $150.

$100 is only used as an easy example for math.  You can put down anywhere from $5-bankrupted
