IJon Jones wants to secure his legacy as the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Randy Couture has some advice for him ... move up to heavyweight and win another title!!

TMZ Sports talked to Couture -- one of the greatest fighters in UFC history -- about Jones, and his beef with the UFC's P4P rankings.

Of course, 33-year-old Jones has held down the #1 spot for a while, but was bumped earlier this week for the retired Khabib Nurmagomedov ... and has been beefin' with MMA fans over the decision online.

Randy tells us if Jon wants to make it clear he's the best in the world, all he's gotta do is put on a few pounds and fight Stipe Miocic or Francis Ngannou.

"I think if Jon really wants to solidify himself as pound-for-pound, he needs to go up to heavyweight and he needs to take a shot at winning that title. And, then that erases any argument that anybody could have."

Couture says Jon's dominated the light heavyweight division for so long ...but tells us winning in another division would take his career to a different level.

"I think that's something that Jones needs to look at, and really solidly his legacy in the sports by going up and winning the heavyweight division, and showing just how technically proficient and athletic he is."

FYI, Jones relinquished his LHW belt a few months back ... and has flirted with the idea of moving up to fight a top heavyweight.

If Jones decides to make the jump, and wins his second belt ... you're not gonna hear Randy Couture dispute that Jon's the best.

Jon's a puss. He only wants an immediate title shot or 20M to fight Francis. He isnt confident in a move to HW, thats why he he hasnt ever moved up.

He already talked of Fighting Jan after he knew he didnt have to fight Reyes again. He can stay 'retired' and look at the P4P list with Khabibs name on top instead of his and cry some more.

This pretty much hits the nail on the head.

He's been little-brothered by his brothers.  The programmed response is that any guy with a size advantage will rough-house him the same way that his brothers did.  He wants no part of that.

Really undermines the tough guy, greatest of all time persona that he's trying to project.

He's not even the toughest of his three brothers.

If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much -

Its only natural he calls out a MW and wants that fight, he has always enjoyed a size advantage fighting tons of MWs.

Smith, Santos, Chael, Vitor, Machida etc...

Jones talks about fighting HWs for a decade while fighting MWs the whole time.

Reminds me of Tito.... Tito enjoyed a size advantage in many fights but never faced a larger man.

Thats why fans respect Saku, Randy, Renzo, Penn etc... so much more than guys like Tito and Jones who would fight smaller men but never face a larger man.

Hes packing on weight for Heavyweight, has been for awhile. He literally tried to fight Francis but the brass stopped him. As far as him getting an immediate title shot when he moves up, it would absolutely be justified. The man beat DC twice before anyone else did, DC at one time was considered the GOAT at Heavyweight. If Jones wants a title right away, he deserves it. I think he's the P4P best. Not taking anything away from khabib, but Jones's resume is far more impressive. More championships won, defeated more former champions, tougher competition and also fought more frequently. Jones will be at Heavyweight soon enough, and he will likely capture another world title.. probably won't see it until 2021 tho.

Going to be interesting to see the reaction when he shows up for the HW weigh in.

Hes going to go from a dude that stays as lean as possible and cuts weight vs a dude that’s been training to pack on some mass + not needing to cut the water weight for the scale.

He’s might actually hit 240 on the scale.

Agreed, although there's a better chance of him getting KTFO'd in one shot at that division, and that's why a lot of us will be watching.
