Rose Namajunas hasn’t had much to say about one of the most infamous incidents in combat sports history – until now.

The-then UFC strawweight champion was scheduled to defend her title in a rematch against Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 223 on April 7, 2018 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Two days before the event, however, Conor McGregor – enraged by a confrontation between his friend Artem Lobov and Khabib Nurmagomedov, and the UFC stripping him of the lightweight title – flew in from Ireland with a posse to exact revenge on Nurmagomedov.

McGregor and his crew attacked a bus carrying Nurmagomedov and several other fighters from UFC 223 media day. Namajunas was among those caught in the crossfire. And in a new UFC series titled “UFC Year of the Fighter: Rose Namajunas,” she explained just how scary it was and how close she came to getting seriously injured.

“It was like an eternity being in that bus, because I had no idea who that was that was attacking us,” Namajunas said. “All of a sudden I see a big ol’ fist kind of bang on my window and then I see one of the security guards grab one of the dudes. I didn’t know it was Conor until a little bit later. When he threw the dolly, the bus was backing up into the elevator spot as he threw it to the window right in front of me. But had the bus not been moving, it would have hit my window.”

The incident was traumatic for Namajunas not just because she narrowly escaped serious injury, but it brought back childhood memories she thought she had long left behind.

“In my head, once I found out it was Conor, I was a little relieved, but I still was on edge,” Namajunas said. “It just took me back to when I was a kid, riding to school through bad neighborhoods on a bus and people throwing (expletive) at our bus. And I’ve never been completely cornered like that. We were just sitting there not in control. So what did I do in that moment? I said the Lord’s prayer again and then it did make me feel a little bit better at that moment, and it got me through that tough moment.

“And everything that was from my childhood, this is what I fought to get out of, and this is like back to stupid street (expletive). I don’t want to be around that any more. That’s what I fought my way out of.”

Although she was shaken up, Namajunas managed to channel the negativity into yet another outstanding performance in the octagon, as she willed her way to victory two nights later over one of the greatest women’s competitors of all time in Jedrzejczyk.

“I came back around it, like, this is also what I’m here for,” Namajunas said. “So I took it as motivation to show the world that’s not gonna stop me.”

You can rarely predict what will and won't traumatize you. I had some horrible things happen to me as a kid that didn't seem to affect me, and some relative normal shitty experiences that fucked me up.

I know guys that came back from war okay, but then their girlfriend dumping them destroyed them.

It's all so personal and sometimes seems random.

Maybe, but if having people throw shit at your school bus is traumatizing, then she has not really been through much. Sorry, but that is weak as hell...

Honestly, I think random stuff messes with people. I talked about this in my post above. I know guys that came back from war okay, but then their girlfriend dumping them destroyed them.

I am trying to see your point and yes it is a valid one. But, how weak of a society are we when ghetto kids throwing shit at your school bus causes you emotional trauma???

I don't know if it reflect the weakness of society. I think shit has messed with people for a long time.

Rose has showed that she is very physically tough in the cage. She is obviously very disciplined. It seems like she has some demons, too. She doesn't make a big show of it and she doesn't hype it to get attention. But, she's honest about it. So, my hat is off to her.

Reasonable discourse and nuance when discussing the mental fortitude of a WMMA fighter?

Don't you know this is the UG, bruh?

Great fighter but I suspect she's the type of girl that is traumatized by a lot of things. Probably a reason why she fights.

At the end of the day fighting 115 lb girls isn’t really scary even if you’re also one. I mean, outside of a child who is less capable of causing damage? A disabled person?

I'm a fan of Rose and Trevor and Pat.

Not everyone is the same and you just have to appreciate them for who they are.  Rose in my opinion is a great example of someone who lacked confidence, at times still lacks confidence, but she is able to muster up courage to fight the demons that are her fears.

She's surrounded herself with good people in Trevor Whitman and Pat Barry who truly have her best interest at heart and have not only molded her into one helluva fighter, but how they help her in the technical aspects they also seem to be big factors on focusing on her mental state to make sure she trains like she should and come fight night she fights like she should.

The fact her journey didn't seem to be easy I think makes it all the more special but I completely understand it's not normal for most champions to be so open about things they fear so I get the comments but I just appreciate how she fights and leaves it all out there.
