UnderGround Forums Why Frank Shamrock stopped consuming cannabis

The medical uses of cannabis are widely understood, and growing, but there's a little eye-rolling around the subject, too. Should be a UFC Hall of Famer Frank Shamrock has long advocated for use of cannabis, and consumed it for decades. Now in a clear sign that his use was medicinal and not recreational, he's quit, as the source of the problem he was addressing has resolved.

Throughout his life and predating his fighting career, Shamrock lived in constant pain from spondylolysis, a defect in the vertebral arch. He took cannabis to control the pain.

“I just found cannabis was a wonderful pain reliever,” said Shamrock to Sam Riches for The Growth Op. “I used it for my entire sports career. All the world championship titles, everything that I achieved, I used cannabis on a daily basis.”

“I had a very strong belief that this was a very powerful and good medicine to use, but I couldn’t recommend it. I couldn’t talk about it. I didn’t feel good about it. So the minute it got legalized in California, I was right at the front of the line to talk about it.”

“Football players and fighters are literally getting blasted in the brain. Cannabis is a proven neuroprotectant. I feel terrible for these guys that are in a sport where their brains are being damaged and they can’t take a medicine that’s proven to protect them.”

Two years ago Shamrock was reduced to crawling around the house and he finally sought out a specialist. After a series of realignments, soft tissue massages, and back exercises, the pain has largely resolved. With the pain gone, he no longer has a need for cannabis.

“I always looked at it as medicine and nothing else really," he said. "Once my ailments went away, I made a decision like, ‘I don’t really need this medicine.’ If I did, I would be taking it, but I just don’t.”

“It’s far better medicine than what is commonly prescribed for pain. But I can drive a state over and I’ll get arrested. There’s such division and there are so many layers to this becoming a medicine again like it was 100 years ago. I feel like we have a long way to go to catch up in this country to get this medicine to the people that could really use it and need it. But I’m very optimistic.”

They must not have been testing for cannabis when Frank was fighting. I am not saying that cannabis should be a banned substance for fighters, or for anyone else, as I think it should not be, but I know it was added to the list of banned substances for fighters, but I am not sure if it still is or not.

One would think that with so many states having passed medicinal marijuana, and/or legalizing recreational marijuana, that there'd no longer be a problem with fighters using it.

I know a lot of people who smoked pot when they were younger then eventually grew out of it.

It does seem odd considering he always portrayed himself on the forefront of scientific training.

It does seem odd

But everything he says I agree with. It just seems weird he would waited so long for treatments unless they are somehow top-notch-and-new-as-hell.

The homeless brother was odd because he chose to have it in his documentary.

Unfortunately, not many grow out of getting drunk.

He had to put his mother in a nursing home and find homes for her multiple dogs.
One of them he couldn't so he left it in the back of a truck at the airport with food and water and called airport security and left a message to make it their problem.
They apparently didn't get around to the message for a few days and took a few days more to find the dog (5 days total I think).

What is "consuming cannabis"?

Is that technical slang for "smoked pot"?

I'm serious here. I don't know if he's talking about some medicinal form I'm unaware of or he was just smoking weed.

Let me get this straight. Lifelong athlete has chronic pain. And after many years of dealing with it, some back exercises, adjustments and massages make it disappear.  Sounds odd.

It should be noted it's his claim that he left a message, I don't believe that was ever verified. Either way who the hell just leaves a message on voicemail about a living animal that is stranded and tied up to a truck and doesn't follow up. It was a witness that called the police when they noticed the dog, not security, I doubt they were ever contacted. His effort was a fbook msg asking someone to pick up the dog at the airport when his flight was leaving. He probably figured if someone reached out he'd direct them to the truck, but nobody ever did so he just forgot about her. While Zelda was abandoned and afraid Frank was hitting the slopes in Aspen.

Another interesting thing about ol Frank is when he did that gym rescue show one of the gym owners he was trying to "save" claims Frank was messaging his wife at night trying to get her to come over and join him in the hot tub.
