Khabib Gaethje is less than two weeks away. Here Khabib has said what most of the UG has said... Tony could have took a fight with Chandler or Makhachev at 254 and put himself right at the front of the line to fight the Khabib/Gaethje winner but Tony chose not to take those fights. Pointless for him to pass up those fights and talk about Khabib and Gaethje. Tony passing on all those fights when he knows he is not getting a title shot coming off the Gaethje loss is telling.

Its very rare to see a fighter pass on a #1 contenders fight.

Time will tell if Poirier vs Conor gets made. Everyone wants to see what is next for Tony, Chandler, Oliveira and Makhachev as well.

Some damn good LW fights booked after the Khabib fight like the Ferreira and Moicano fights in Nov.

Of course fans are waiting on Tony, Conor, Chandler, Oliveira, Makhachev etc... to get fights announced too.

I also look forward to the the return of Lee, Taisumov, Gillespie, Santos and Madsen ASAP.  Leo Santos is the most underrated fighter in the sport right now.

Great that UFC recently added Chandler and Gamrot. Hopefully they get Vartanyan too.

Upcoming LW fights:

Gamrot vs Kutateladze 10/17

Khabib vs Gaethje- 10/24

Green vs Moises 10/31

Hernandez vs Gruetzemacher 10/31

Ferreira vs Dober 11/7

Moicano vs Fiziev 11/28

Conor vs Poirier Maybe

Khabib says he wants one more fight after Gaethje, vs. GSP, in all likelihood at a catchweight, and then retires. Assuming he beats Gaethje, who will be the champ after him? And if Khabib loses, who beats Not Mental Gaethje?

That would be great if Khabib wins and GSP does come back for that fight, would be one of the biggest fights in the sport's history. Who will be the champ after Khabib? Great question. I think everyone is so excited for the Gaethje and maybe GSP fights that nobody but you has looked that far ahead yet. Gaethje has looked so damn good the past couple years, I think he is the most likely next champion after Khabib retires though I do think Khabib beats him next Saturday. If not Gaethje then Poirier, Oliveira, Ferreira and Makhachev would be at the top of my list of next likely champions. Just can't see Tony doing it at this point due to age and all the wars.

Guess the "Conor calls all the shots and UFC/Khabib/etc... have no power" crowd are wrong once again.

https://www.espn.com/mma/story/_/id/30114977/conor-mcgregor-offered-dustin-poirier-fight-only-jan-23

Asked whether there was any chance UFC could move some of those fights around to meet McGregor's timeline, White said the company could not.

"That's not how it works," White said. "We laid out this year. He was retired. Would anybody disagree he was retired? Through this crazy pandemic year we're going through, we faced a lot of challenges. There were a lot of things done to make this thing work. We made it happen. We have our schedule laid out. Fighters have committed to it. Fighters have started training for these fights. Conor came back and wants to fight Dustin, so we went out and got him his own date. It's Jan. 23."

One twist in all of this is McGregor has expressed interest in boxing Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao, confirming on social media recently that he is interested in facing Poirier because Poirier is a southpaw -- like Pacquiao -- with good boxing skills.

For his part, White said he has no idea what is going on with a potential boxing match between McGregor and Pacquiao.

I don't understand what the UFC is doing with Oliveria and Islam. These guys make 155 so interesting.

Oliveira's manager said in the past that UFC was not the problem, they try to get ranked fighters to fight Charles and they all were turning down the fight so Charles had to fight those low ranked guys. Lee was the only name willing to fight him. Then Dariush was but Charles pulled out for unknown reasons. I'm sure we will see him booked in the first quarter of 2021 was someone in the top 15, maybe Dariush again.

Regarding Islam... sounds like UFC was willing to do Islam vs Chandler next weekend but Chandler turned it down on twitter. Khabib talked about it. RDA had agreed to fight him but we saw covid fuck that one up. Will be interesting to see what RDA has left and what the aging former champ can do in the shark tank of a division.

Ha, thanks. The current UFC LW division is just the most interesting thing to me in all of sports so I follow it more closely than anything else.

Gamrot and Kutateladze earned FOTN so thats 7 FOTN fights for the LWs this year and the division has also earned 9 POTNs in that time. LW holds the record for both FOTN and POTN awards in 2020 by a wide margin.

So we know UFC signed Chandler, Gamrot, Kutateladze and maybe Vartanyan will be signed soon as too. On top of those new signings the UFC has signed Cage Warriors LW and WW champ 10-0 Mason Jones to a deal.

Two-division Cage Warriors champion Mason Jones signs with UFC

“I asked Graham (Boylan, Cage Warriors president) and I asked Ian (Dean, Cage Warriors matchmaker) to dig up the biggest monster they could find and, unfortunately, it’s not enough,” he said. “So I’ve got a challenge for Dana White, for Sean Shelby, for anyone in the UFC looking. I’ll be ready to go in a week, in two weeks, in four. Find the biggest, deadliest lightweight monster you can find – because I’m a lightweight guy – and I’ll go out there and dismantle them. Dig me up the biggest monster you can find, and I’ll put them away in two.”

It sucks Tony should have gotten a shot 5 years ago already. Sometimes they just wait too long with theses guys.

Zabit comes to mind as well. He could very well have been the best guy at featherweight for a while now.

Khabib's performance tonight was just amazing.

Sounds like this is it for Khabib and there will be no attempt at 30-0.

Conor, Tony, Dustin, Chandler etc...  won't be around forever either. We just saw Alvarez leave and Diaz, Masvidal, Burns, etc.... moved up.

Its been an insane division to watch over the past five years, the best eva.

Posted this in another thread but this thread is more relevant for discussion on the matter

Is Conor vs Dustin even officially booked? I’d go

Conor vs Gaethje for vacant title

Ferguson vs Poirier

Hooker vs Chandler

Conor/Gaethje would be a big fight. Poirier vs Ferguson has already been attempted to get booked. Hooker has been taking shots at Chandler on Twitter and would be a top five opponent for Mike, who the UFC are clearly high on
Although I admit I’d like to see Oliviera get a shot at one of the top guys, he’s been really developing his stand up. And he’s such a submission specialist that I was always hoping he’d make it to Khabib to give him a different type of challenge than all the strikers he’s faced. But I can see the UFC rebooking him vs Dariush, maybe on the same card as one of the other LW fights in case they need a replacement

Makhachev will be interesting to watch as well. His fight with RDA just got rebooked as the headliner for Fight Night card on Nov.14

Also have Ferreira and Gillespie. Ferreira coming off a Pettis win but I’m not sold on him yet tbh. Gillespie is fun but so inactive. Hasn’t fought since losing to Lee last December

If Nate is considering returning to 155 that makes things a lot more interesting as well

With Khabib's mastercl@ss performance... thats 7 FOTN's and 10 POTN's for the LWs this year.

I think Dana said Conor vs Dustin is gonna happen but contracts not yet signed.

Don't think it should be Conor vs Gaethje for the title after Gaethje just got smoked and Conor just beat a shot fighter at WW.

Ferg vs Poirier and Hooker vs Chandler are great fights.

I agree I can see UFC rebooking Oliveira vs Dariush

Makhachev is always interesting to watch, glad RDA is returning to LW and fighting the young killer once again.

Not sold on Ferreira? He just smoked Pettis and Taisumov, thats a bad man. Gillespie is solid and we will see if he gets more active in 2021. Could have been dealing with lots of injury, who knows.

With Khabib retiring its important to note... Tony, Chandler, RDA, Santos, etc... are all getting up there in age and will be retiring in the next few years too. We know Conor won't fight much longer too.

Also Oliveira and Poirier... they are young still but have over a decade in the UFC so we could see them retire with those old guys over the next few years.

Been just amazing watching the elite LWs over the past five, six years.
