Cyborg, Pena furious over Rousey’s immediate title shot

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will return to the Octagon vs. champion Amanda Nunez at UFC 207 on December 30, 2016, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While fan excitement is high, two female fighters in particular were not impressed. At all. Invicta FC featherweight and UFC catchweight Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino called it ridiculous. And Julianna Peña said she might leave the UFC.

Justino responded via Instagram.

“This is why my fight with Ronda Rousey will never happen,” she began, as translated by Lucas Rezende for BE. I just got back from Thailand and it seems that Ronda Rousey vs. Amanda Nunes, for the belt, on December 30, was announced on the internet.

“It’s ridiculous that Ronda is getting a title shot after being beat up by Holly and after taking a year off. This will only support the story about Ronda being a media product.

“Ronda is benefited by the company’s brand more than any other fighter has ever existed. She has benefited from the best interviews, the best sponsors, the best fight promoting advertisement and spotlights. But even with all of that to back her up, we still saw she was not the best.

“There’s a reason why Ronda is not coming back to fight Holly Holm, and it’s not the fact that Holm is now 0-2 since their fight. The reason is that even Ronda knows that Holly is the better fighter. Styles make fights and it’s the same reason why she will never take a fight against me. She knows my punches, my size, and my aggressiveness.

“I only moved to 140 lbs. to try and make a fight with Ronda possible. I left my weight class behind this year, in order to make superfights. Unlike Conor McGregor, my superfights were not against big name opponents and just like Jose Aldo, there are plenty of fighters ready to fight me for the belt, like Megan Anderson, Cindy Dandois, Julia Budd and Alexis Dufresne.

“I can’t force anyone to take a fight against me. Ronda can keep using her steroids excuse to avoid me. But I’ve been proving everyone wrong. I was the only athlete who accepted to be tested by the USADA one year prior to my UFC debut.

“Ronda never fought to earn her UFC belt. She got it at a press conference and in her first defense, she didn’t even face the number one contender. ”

Justino’s comments were a praise song in comparison with Peña’s. Peña is currently the #5 contender, and is undefeated in the UFC, on a four-fight win streak.

“It’s bulls***,” said Peña to Danny Segura for MMA Fighting. “That spoiled brat has gotten everything handed to her, and she’s getting everything handed to her again. It’s bulls***.”

“Never in the history have I ever heard of somebody have a no-controversy brutal knockout, then quit the sport, and then come back and get a title shot right away. The girl is mentally weak and Amanda Nunes is going to f***ing knock her out and expose her a**. She’s literally the worst fighter on the roster, and I can’t stomach the fact that I’m not getting the title shot. I don’t know how they conduct business over there, but they’re going to do what they want no matter what, so there is not really much I could do. Back to the drawing board, I guess.”

“I definitely think she’s trying to avoid a fight with me, 110 percent. That girl is running from me. I won her whole show and she sees me to continue win, and she’s yet to say my name ever. She’s definitely avoiding me and if she comes back and wins this one, she’ll probably retire and never fight again. She’s going to do everything possible to avoid me for the rest of her career. She doesn’t want anything to do with me and I don’t blame her. She knows I would whoop her ‘f***ing ass.”

“Maybe I’ll go fight for Combate [Americas] or something because it sounds like they want to pay me serious money and actually give me a belt right off the bat just like they did with Ronda in the UFC. They just handed Ronda a belt and Combate will hand me a belt, so I don’t know, we’ll see how that goes.”

Cyborg will be heartened but Peña may be further frustrated still by what UFC president Dana White had to say. When White made the announcement about Rousey’s official return, Colin Cowherd asked him why Rousey was not coming back vs. Cris Cyborg.

“I know that Cyborg wants that fight,” replied White. “Ronda wants that fight too. So … Ronda’s plan right now is to come back and try to win her title back. And if that happens, the Cyborg fight will definitely happen.”
