Exclusive: Carwin announces his intention to return

Former heavyweight champion announces his intention to return to the UFC!
Former heavyweight champion Shane Carwin announces retirement

Shane Carwin was one of the most dominant heavyweights in the UFC from his 2008 debut to his world title win against Frank Mir in 2010.

Carwin was one of the division's heaviest hitters and had a solid all around style. Carwin burst into the UFC after going 8-0 in regional promotions. Not only did he bring in a perfect record, all eight bouts he finished in the first round and his UFC debut was no different. Carwin defeated Christian Wellisch by TKO forty-four seconds into the first round.

Carwin would continue his first round finish streak by defeating Neil Wain, Gabriel Gonzaga, and then Frank Mir all by TKO. The win over Mir earned Carwin the title of UFC heavyweight champion.

Unfortunately for Carwin, he would lose the title in his first defense to Brock Lesnar, then drop his next fight, a decision to Junior Dos Santos in 2011. After back to back loses and citing some serious physical issues, Carwin announced his retirement from the sport.

Now five years removed from his last Octagon appearance, Carwin today revealed exclusively on the Underground that is making a comeback and has already notified the UFC of his intentions to return:

I had management let the UFC know I am considering a return and looking into what goes into that. Who would you like to see me face?

There has been no official word from the organization on when and where fans might expect to see Carwin return, but no doubt he will be a boost to the heavyweight division.
