UnderGround Forums Rafael Alves explains record weight miss - salmon

There are a large number of remarkable, even astonishing UFC records. Jon Jones has won 14 title fights without a loss. Cowboy Cerrone and Jim Miller have each fought 33 times in the Octagon. Frankie Edgar has spent nearly a full work day (7:40:51) in the Octagon - imagine going to work and from 9 to 5, having to fight the baddest men on the planet, no lunch break.

Rafael Alves set a less luminous record at the UFC Vegas 19 weigh-ins when he was 11.5 pounds over the contracted 146 featherweight non-title limit. The fighter out of Para, Brazil missed weight for lightweight.

If you want to know what's going on in MMA in the birthplace of the sport, follow Guilherme Cruz. *The Turn” spoke with Cruz, and offered an explanation about WTF happened.

“I ate salmon yesterday and fell ill, vomit and diarrhea, so the doctor said I had to treat it with water,” he texted. “I only had [4.4 pounds] left to cut, [but] when I drank water my weight went up and got stuck, so the doctor didn’t clear me to fight. But God owns everything and He knows what He does.”

Alves told Cruz his walking around weight is 195 pounds. And he said he's done with featherweight.

“[UFC matchmaker] Sean Shelby said that health is what matters now,” said Alves. “He told me this has happened to champions before, and told me to fight at 155 and come back stronger. They won’t cut me because they had to change opponents and they were searching for a new one, some said they would fight at 155 and others at 145, so I didn’t focus on the guy I was fighting nor my weight. But I’m going to fight at 155 now. I’m focused and nothing will stop me.

“I know a lot of people are criticizing me, but I don’t care. Jesus was God’s son and he was criticized despite all his power, so imagine me, a flawed man on Earth? But thank God the UFC hasn’t said they will cut me, so I’ll be back soon. They said I’m a showman that will give the UFC a lot of profit.”

It's effortless to malign Alves over the epic fail, but in the final analysis, the entire weight-cutting system in MMA is unhinged. In what other sport do you have to wreck yourself to the point where it's regularly a struggle to walk, just a day before engaging in one of the most challenging physical pursuits on the planet? Add in concussion, and the increased danger of same due to dehydration, and the culture of extreme weight cutting in mixed martial arts is worse than nuts.

So Alves, yah, he flailed epically, but I have met the enemy, and he is us.

He didnt "have to wreck himself".  He could have fought at 185lbs. He chose to wreck himself because hes an idiot. And you re choosing to construct a false narrative placing blame on the sport, and not on alves. Which is strange, even for a guy who wears a scuba suit like its liesure wear.

The extreme weight cutting of this era is rediculous. Only pussys wanna try to fight smaller opponents. Weak sauce.

I love the comparison to Jesus.  I’m not a bible scholar but I missed the part where Jesus had to cut 50 lbs before they put him on the cross.

Nice editorial article Kirik, at least it gave some context to the insanity. I could have skipped his Jesus comparisons but at least he seems to be getting another chance instead of destroying his entire career before it could actually get started.

Walks around at 195, fights at 145. Definitely the salmon, and God's plan for him. :D

I'm walking at 188lbs shredded and I wouldn't want to try to get to 170.

After a camp focused on weighing less I would probably be 178-184. I still wouldn't enjoy making 170 but it would be doable.

195 to 155 is retarded. Anything lower is pure idiocy.

195 walk around weight is fucking mental. For comparrison, Conor fought Nate (1) at 168lbs and didn't cut anything. Going from 195 to 145 is fucking nuts, how are fighters like Frankie et al suppose to compete with guys who would literally outweigh them by 30 lbs come fight time?
