Leaked footage has emerged of prison inmates participating in an organized ‘Fight Club’ while detained behind bars at Mt Eden Correctional Facility in Auckland, New Zealand. The one-on-one bouts were filmed in both inmate cells and the facility’s exercise yard. They were captured by contraband cell phones and subsequently uploaded illegally to social media.
It was reported that about 27 contraband cell phones and 22 SIM cards were smuggled into the prison facility in the past year alone. The majority of the inmates who participated in the unsanctioned fights were seen sporting ‘Black Power’ gang tattoos. ‘Black Power’ is a prominent gang in New Zealand, with members predominantly from Maori and Polynesian background. The gang was formed in response to the rival ‘Mongrel Mob’ gang and other white power gangs.
The footage showed inmates brutally attacking one another with hard punches and kicks, while surrounded by a group of other inmates who crowded around to witness and encourage the bloodshed. Each fight lasted several minutes with no interruption or interference from prison authorities at any point. The organized ‘Fight Club’ was only revealed to prison officials after Nikki Roper, a convicted murderer, was hospitalized after incurring serious injuries during one of the bare-knuckle bouts.
Mt Eden prison management is now under review after the footage was made public. Measures have been taken to add additional security to the facility, such as limiting the access of inmates to the exercise yard. A thorough investigation to examine the incidents has been proposed.
mma.tv does not condone participating in unsanctioned fights of any kind— unless you are forced to defend yourself or your family and friends.
