17-year-old Nate Diaz in unsanctioned fight with grown man
Thought to be UFC fighter Nate Diaz’s first fight back in 2002 against a much older and bigger Robert Limon in what looks to be a bare-knuckle fight, but with open hand strikes.
Nate Diaz may be one of the most well-known names in the 155lbs UFC division now, but it wasn’t long ago that Diaz was taking on bouts inside gyms to try and make a name for himself.
This video has emerged as of one of Diaz’s first fights prior to turning professional and making his MMA debut at WEC 12, where he defeated Alejandro Garcia with a triangle choke in the first round.
Nathan Donald Diaz, professionally known as Nate Diaz, is a mixed martial artist. He is the younger brother of mixed martial artist and former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and former WEC Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz. In addition to the UFC, Diaz has competed in the WEC, Strikeforce, and Pancrase in Japan.
Watch a 17-year-old Diaz taking on Robert Limon from Team Kihon in one of Diaz’s first unsanctioned fights and the Gracie fighter shows that the “Stockton Slap” has been around for a long time.
Nate, the younger brother of Nick Diaz, was born and raised in Stockton, California. Like his brother, he went to Tokay High School, and at the age of 14, Nate began training with Nick. Together, they run a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school in Lodi, California, and is known to train with Nicolas ‘Nico Greek’ Lipari.
From the Nate Diaz official UFC profile:
TRAINING: A typical day starts with a good run. Afterward, I spar either boxing or kickboxing. Later I work jiu-jitsu and takedowns. I lift weights late at night and try to eat as healthy as possible.
When and why did you start training for fighting? I started training when I was younger just because I didn’t have much else to do, and that’s what my brother (Nick Diaz) did. I just went to the gym with him, he started fighting in the UFC, and I wanted to help him win fights so I did everything I could. I put on the gloves and sparred with him, and before I knew it I was getting a fight of my own.
What ranks and titles have you held? Black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner.
Do you have any heroes? Nick Diaz, Cesar Gracie, the entire Gracie family, and all my training partners on the Cesar Gracie Fight Team. [sources: whoatv.com, wiki, ufc.com]
