Taunting is a part of combat sports and always has been. The great ‘Muhammed Ali’ was maybe the best there ever was at it. In mixed martial arts, Conor McGregor and fighters like the Diaz brothers have used it as a weapon in the mental warfare against their opponents.

Taunting can make your opponent fight like he normally wouldn’t. Sometimes it can make a wrestler want to trade punches more than he might wanted have. Sometimes it can cause an experienced striker to fight more like a brawler. When used right, it can be a strategy to get an opponent to play into a fight that is more to the taunter’s liking.

However, it can also backfire. Taunting that ends up in you being more successful and winning a fight looks like good strategy. But taunting that ends up with on your back as the victim of a brutal knockout can just comes across as cockiness and often fans rejoice in seeing that result
