ANNOUNCEMENTS: 3 upcoming Bellator fights, “Venom” Page & Douglas Lima return
Ahead of their stacked Bellator 257 fight card, the promotion has dropped news of three upcoming fights including the return of welterweight champion Douglas Lima, contender Michael “Venom” Page, and a fight between two-ranked female featherweights looking to jump up the division.
A current champion takes on an undefeated challenger
After coming up short in his attempt to become a two-weight world champion losing to Gegard Mousasi in a middleweight title fight, current welterweight champion Douglas Lima is making his return back to his division. MMA Junkie was first to report that Lima is set to return at Bellator 260, on June 11, and he will defend his title against undefeated challenger Yaroslav Amosov.
The welterweight champion will come back to the division where he holds the title and his last victory came as a unanimous decision victory over Rory MacDonald in 2019, where Lima not only retained the belt but also won the Welterweight World Grand Prix and the $1 million prize. As for his challenger, Amosov is 25-0 in his professional career, with his last victory coming as a split decision win over Logan Storley, improving his Bellator career to 6-0.
The return of Michael “Venom” Page
Making his first appearance since October of 2020, Michael “Venom” Page will make his return to the Bellator cage against an opponent who he’s been scheduled to fight twice before dating back to 2017. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani was first to report that Page will face Derek Anderson at Bellator 258, the next scheduled event for the promotion. After suffering a first-round knockout to Douglas Lima back at Bellator 221 in 2019, Page has put together a four-fight winning streak with his most recent win coming over the previously undefeated Ross Houston. The second-ranked contender welcomes Anderson, who currently sits sixth in the promotion’s rankings and is on his own three-fight winning streak.
Ranked female featherweights finally meet
Gareth A. Davies was first to report that a fight between ranked featherweight contenders Leah McCourt and Janay Harding will finally take place almost exactly a year after they were originally scheduled to face each other. Harding, who currently sits sixth in the featherweight division picked up a unanimous decision victory over Jessy Miele in November of last year. McCourt is currently ranked eighth in the division and her last fight was a unanimous decision victory over Judith Ruis at Bellator 240 in February of 2020. The two were scheduled to meet in May of 2020 but the fight was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a big opportunity for both women who have the opportunity to jump into the featherweight’s top-five rankings depending on how the fight plays out on May 21, at Bellator 259.
