The main event of UFC on ESPN 2 in Philadelphia, PA featured a lightweight bout between top contenders Justin Gaethje and Edson Barboza. The fight highlighted a six-fight main card on ESPN that ended with three straight highlight reel finishes.
Saturday night’s UFC Philadelphia main event promised to be be fireworks, and that’s exactly what it was.
Justin Gaethje stood in against Edson Barboza at the Wells Fargo Center, and did what Justin Gaethje is expected to do: He stood directly in Barboza’s wheelhouse until he landed a concussive blow to put Barboza away.
The end came at 2:30 of round one. Gaethje landed a big right hand that stiffened Barboza and sent him straight to the canvas. Referee Kevin McDonald immediately stepped in and stopped the fight, and Gaethje did a back flip off the top of the Octagon.

He digs to the body, but Gaethje swings back and has hurt him almost immediately. Barboza’s right eye bothering him bad. He’s trying to tie things up and recover. Gaethje pressing in from the outside and looking to strike in the clinch. Barboza finally pulls back to the center. Barboza lands a left hand, and they’re exchanging bombs. Gaethje lands clean again. Both men throwing down, tossing caution to the wind. Barboza with his back to the cage and tries to slip free, but Gaethje lands a right hand, and Barboza is out cold. Vicious.
