Gordon Ryan signs with One Championship
On Monday, 22 March, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced on the social network that submission grappling ace Gordon “The King” Ryan has signed with the world’s largest martial arts organization:
BREAKING NEWS: Gordon Ryan has signed with ONE Championship for both mixed martial arts and submission grappling! As the world’s greatest grappler of all time, Gordon joins the planet’s most elite group of active pound-for-pound GOATS in martial arts today!
ONE is the Home of Martial Arts!
Ryan too made an announcement on his social network
As many of you already know, I just signed a huge deal with One Championship. The matches will be grappling matches, with MMA on the table if I choose to go that route. Right now, my main focus is ADCC 2022, but if I choose to fight MMA eventually, my new home at ONE will be where I debut. I am very excited to see my fans in other parts of the world, but also to rebrand myself as one of the best fence wrestlers of all time. I’ve managed to outpace the competition in the open, so wrestling the fence will present new challenges for me, which is very exciting. I also want to take a second to thank Chatri Sityodtong for taking the time to personally talk with me about making this deal happen. I am insanely busy on a daily basis so I can’t imagine how busy he must be. Him taking time out of his days to chat with me shows me that he wants this to be more than a business deal, but a partnership. I look forward to pushing ONE (and grappling) to new heights.
Ryan is considered by many to be one of the greatest submission grapplers of all time.
The 25-year-old American has won a plethora of accolades throughout his career. He’s a three-time ADCC World Champion, a three-time IBJJF No-Gi World Champion, and a four-time Eddie Bravo Invitational Champion. Now, Ryan will take his elite skills to the Circle, where he will compete in submission grappling and also make his long-awaited debut in mixed martial arts.
In doing so, Ryan could follow a similar path to his Danaher Death Squad teammate Garry “The Lion Killer” Tonon. When Tonon first entered ONE, he defeated former ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki in the promotion’s first-ever Grappling Super-Match in May 2017. “The Lion Killer” then made his mixed martial arts debut in March 2018. He’s since won all six of his professional bouts, finishing five of his opponents in the process, and earning the #3 featherweight ranking.
A date has not been scheduled for Ryan’s debut, but stay tuned to ONEFC.com for more details.Join the discussion on this topic...
