Jones Jones is arguably the best fighter in MMA history. But for a fourth time, he has lost the title without a fight. In 2015 he was stripped of the belt after he was arrested on felony hit-and-run charges for hitting a pregnant woman, breaking her arm, and running away on foot. In 2016 he was stripped over an anti-doping violation. In 2017 he was stripped over another anti-doping violation.
And now, in 2020, the worst year in memory, he has officially stripped himself of the title. The announcement came via Jones’ social network.
Just got off the phone with @Ufc, today I confirm that I’m vacating the light heavyweight championship. It’s officially up for grabs. It’s been an amazing journey, sincere thank you to all my competition, Ufc and most importantly you fans.

The last I spoke with @UFC about my salary there was no negotiating. If that ever changes, i’d love to come back and compete again as a heavyweight. Until then, I’ll be enjoying Ufc has a fan and doing my best to take care of my family and community https://t.co/NoTTpRTMH0

Jones had spent months negotiating for a superfight vs. Francis Ngannou, and reportedly was asking for Deontay Wilder money ($25-30 million). He was repeatedly denied.
Whether this vacating the belt is real or a negotiating tactic is perhaps a moot point, as at this point, it is unclear that anyone cares.
Jones is coming off a controversial win over Dominick Reyes in February; Reyes recently signed a long-term contract extension with the league. If Jones is truly out, Reyes may defend vs. #2 Thiago Santos, #3 Jan Blachowicz, #4 Glover Teixeira, or former champ champ Daniel Cormier. Cormier would be the biggest storyline. Teixeira would be the coolest.
