UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor also literally holds a featherweight belt, is trying to set up a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr, and has a role in Game Of Thrones. Filming for the latest season is ongoing in Belfast, Ireland, and also in Iceland, both of which are near gyms McGregor regularly trains out of
Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are big UFC fans, and appeared on the UFC Unfiltered Podcast in July to describe their love of the sport.
“We talk more about MMA than we do Game of Thrones,” explained the pair. “Every day we get home from shooting we’ll just sit around drink beer and watch Fight Pass.
We loved Diaz’s line, ‘I’m not surprised motherf***ers.’ We were thinking of rewriting that line in the show.
During a recent appearance on “Fox Sports Live” with Jay and Dan, UFC president Dana White confirmed that McGregor had a role on GOT.
“I knew that a few months ago that they were interested in putting him in the show,” said White, as transcribed by TMZ Sports. “And I’m glad he did it. It’ll be great.”
A source tells Watchers on the Wall that McGregor plays a pirate belonging to Euron Greyjoy’s crew, on the ship Silence. The role is a cameo, with no speaking involved.
McGregor has already fought The Mountain. That was, however, light sparring, in preparation for a contest under the Unified Rules of mixed martial arts, with no eye gouging allowed.
That’s a big man – 6-foot-9, 400 pounds, and I still folded him up,” said McGregor afterward. “I was hitting him with some shots – I had to hit him with some shots. He was trying to hit me, as well. People say, ‘He was taking it easy.’ He tried to grab me and tried to pull my head off and I defended – freed the head. I was like, this motherf***er is so big, I have to start smacking him to the body. … But I sunk him good.”
Hafthor Julius Bjornsson saw it differently.
“He believes he won it,” said the real Mountain. “He does not know that I was taking it easy on him because he has a fight and I didn’t want to break him before the fight.”
Rematch!
