The UFC currently has a naming convention that is not wholly parallel with the one the media uses. The current UFC numbering system only counts Pay Per View events when numbering events. This parallels what the media does. Thus the first UFC was UFC 1, and the last UFC was UFC 195.
Shows in FOX or FOX Sports 1 or UFC FIght Pass are officially called UFC Fight Nights, followed by the last name of the main event fighters. These are also referred to by the name of the city.
The media differentiates, numbering the UFC Fight Nights, and also having a numbering system for UFC events on big FOX, which have traditionally been bigger than a UFC Fight Night, but generally a little less than an PPV.
When both Cain Velazquez and Fabricio Werdum dropped out of UFC 196, the has now officially turned into a UFC Fight Night. The media are calling UFC Fight Night 82. Official UFC name is UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson.
With the shift, the lightweight title fight between champion Rafael Dos Anjos and featherweight champion Conor McGregor on Saturday, March 5 in Las Vegas will now be called UFC 196: DOS ANJOS vs. McGREGOR.
