UFC Vegas 27: Must-see matchups

UFC Vegas 27 has very intriguing matchups throughout the card, but three fights in particular are ones that can’t be missed for fans who will be tuning in. Two potential title eliminator fights and the return of one of the most talented young middleweight fighters makes for appointment viewing this weekend.

Cody Garbrandt vs Rob Font: With the flyweight division busy at the top, former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will meet Rob Font as he looks to continue to build momentum at 135-pounds. Garbrandt had planned to move down to the flyweight division and challenge for the title but with a rematch between champion Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno coming up soon, Garbrandt elected to stay at bantamweight. Font comes into the matchup on a three-fight winning streak and a win over the former champion would be the biggest one in his career to date. Even more so, a win for Font elevates him right into the title conversation, while Garbrandt looks to keep his spot at the top of the divsion.

Carla Esparza vs Xiaonan Yan: A new champion sits atop the women’s flyweight division in Rose Namajunas and if the UFC is looking to bring in a new contender, they will have their eyes locked on this matchup. Yan is 13-1 in her professional career, undefeated in the UFC and owns wins over former title challengers Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz, as well as Angela Hill. A win for Yan would make her the near clear-cut favorite as next in line for a title opportunity, but she’ll have to get through the former champion first. Esparza has been a mainstay throughout her career in the strawweight division and with a four-fight winning streak to her name, she a win over Yan would make it tough for the promotion to look elsewhere for a title challenger.

Edmen Shahbazyan vs Jack Hermansson: The middleweight division is open for business looking for contenders and this matchup should be a fun one. Shahbazyan is returning from nearly a one-year layoff after suffering the first loss of his professional career, and taking on a veteran in Hermansson will be no easy task. Shahbazyan seemed to be on the fast track to a title shot but after losing to Derek Brunson last Fall, he will need to pick up a couple big wins before being considered for a title fight. Middleweigiht champion Israel Adesanya wants to stay active as the current champion and in doing so, it means all contenders in the division should stay ready. Hermansson is also coming off a loss, dropping an unanimous decision to Marvin Vettori, who will now challenge for the title. The middleweight division has a lot of interesting contenders, and the winner of this fight could entrench themselves at the top of the list depending on how the fight goes.

With three big matchups that could bring future title challengers, UFC Vegas 27 is full of must-see action throughout the entire card.
