The women’s bantamweight title fight pitting champion Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Pena has been removed from UFC 265 after Nunes tested positive for COVID-19.

Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Pena canceled

ESPN was the first to report on Thursday, that the current two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder tested positive for the virus, and her planned title defense at the August 7 event in Houston, Texas, has been canceled. The news came by way of UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell.

The promotion’s CBO stated the plan is to reschedule the bout as soon as the Brazilian is “fully healthy and ready to compete.”

The canceled booking removes what was planned to be the pay-per-view events co-main event. The card is currently headlined by an interim heavyweight title fight between Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane. The second and third-ranked talents in the 265-pound weight class, respectively.

Nunes (21-7) is currently on a twelve-fight win streak, and last competed in March. On that night at UFC 259, she defended her 145-pound title for the second time with a first-round submission of Australian Megan Anderson.

Pena (10-4) earned her way into a bantamweight title opportunity following a third-round submission victory over Sara McMann in January at UFC 257.
