Anthony Smith calls Ryan Spann ‘f*cking dork’ over Watchmen inspired comment in UFC Vegas 37 promo
Sixth-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight Anthony Smith is giving two thumbs down to UFC Vegas 37 opponent Ryan Spann, after pulling lines from the film Watchmen to hype up their main event matchup on Sept. 18.
During the UFC Vegas 36 broadcast, a promo piece for this Saturday’s latest UFC event aired. The video featured UFC Vegas 37 main event participants in Smith (35-16) and Spann (19-6) as they promoted their upcoming bout. For some, “Superman’s” aggressiveness and seemingly legitimate dislike for Smith caught fans off guard.
In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, the 33-year-old was asked about Spann’s hostile comments. Like those watching the hype video, Smith was taken aback. In addition, he was also surprised and unimpressed with his opponent’s use of a line from the 2009 movie Watchmen to build up the intensity for the matchup.
Anthony Smith calls Ryan Spann a ‘dork’ for channeling ‘Watchmen’s’ Rorschach
“It sounds like a bunch of sh*t that’s bothering him, that he’s got to convince himself. And then at the end, he hit me with the old Watchmen quote, when Rorschach was in prison: ‘I’m not locked in here with you, you’re locked in here with me.’ Get out of here you f*cking dork. Listen, I don’t want to take this too deep because there’s no beef there. I definitely don’t have his respect, which is fine. I will next Saturday night, I promise you that,” Smith said.
“… Like, I don’t really know him. I have gotten a vibe that he doesn’t like me. We’ve been in the same place before, we’ve been in situations where we’re very close to each other, and I just get this vibe that he just doesn’t like me. You don’t have to like everybody, but sometimes I do wonder — I feel like I’m kind of a hard guy to dislike, so I don’t know what that’s about, but honestly, I don’t give a sh*t either way.”
The scene and quote — from the film based on the popular graphic novel — can be found at the 1:13 mark in the video below. And the veteran light heavyweight certainly has a point in Spann’s attempt in looking to channel maniac vigilante Rorschach.
Smith calls Spann one of his most ‘dangerous’ opponents in a long time
Despite his distaste for the eleventh-ranked light heavyweights style for fight hype and the confusing beef he has with him, Smith has a lot of respect for Spann’s abilities. Viewing him as one of the most “dangerous” opponents he has faced in some time.
“He’s one of the more dangerous guys that I’ve faced in a long time. He’s super powerful. He’s athletic. He’s really big, he moves well. He has a lot of positive things to his game. I respect his abilities, for sure. I respect his attributes. I respect his skills,” said Smith.
UFC Vegas 37 takes place on Sept. 18 from inside the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card kicks off at 4 pm ET with the preliminary fights, and the main card follows at 7 pm ET. The entire event airs exclusively on ESPN+.Join the discussion on this topic...
