At UFC 266, Matthew Semelsberger only needed 15 seconds to score a bounce-back knockout win over Mark Sano on the events preliminary card.

Over the first few seconds of the welterweight bout between Semelsberger and Sano, the three-fight UFC veteran pawed out some strikes to look to find his range, and he didn’t need much time to do so. Ten seconds in, a filthy overhand right landed square on the jaw of promotional debutante Sano. The strike, that made “Spartan’s” chin touch his shoulder, immediately put the Nick Diaz protege out cold.

Matthew Semelsberger scores sixth-fastest finish in UFC history at UFC 266

The referee jumped in and stopped the fight at 4:45 of the first round. The KO finish was is now the sixth-fastest in UFC history.

Some questioned if Sano deserved a UFC opportunity after not competing in MMA since 2017, and being winless since 2014, but being friends with one of the top stars on the card has its benefits. The rapid result gave more evidence to those confused by the 30-year-old’s placement on the show.

“Semi the Jedi” gets back in the win column after a unanimous decision loss to Kalinn “Khaos” Williams in June. He is now 3-1 in the organization.
