Miesha Tate is the top contender for the UFC bantamweight championship and will fight Holly Holm for the title at UFC 196 on March 5th. She is also one the most well-known woman combat athletes thanks to her ferocious MMA skills and her beauty.

Miesha Tate’s first nick name was ‘Takedown’. She earned it for her wrestling prowess in the cage. Tate wrestled for Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma, Washington and a won a state championship during her senior year in 2005.
As there was no women’s wrestling team, Tate wrestled for the boys team.

Tate was introduced to mixed martial arts in college at Central Washington University. Tate did not pursue wrestling in college, but on the recommendation of a friend visit the college’s MMA club where she became interested in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as well.

Tate fought her first amateur fight in 2006 against Elizabeth Posener, who was a Muay Thai specialist. Tate lost the fight after her corner threw in the towel after the second round. Tate would win her next five amateur fights.

Tate made her professional mixed martial arts debut a year later at a one-night HooknShoot tournament. The promotion was the first to put women in featured bouts. Although she won her first round bout, she suffered a tough head kick knockout loss in the next round.

Tate won her first regional title in 2009, defeating Liz Carreiro to become the FCF Women’s Bantamweight champion. She defended the title once eight months later.
4) Jumping rope
In her highest profile to do date, Miesha Tate fought Elaina Maxwell for Strikeforce in an event which aired on Showtime and CBS. She won the fight by unanimous decision.
3) Head to Toe
Tate competed in Strikeforce’s first ever women’s tournament, winning two fights in the same night to be the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Tournament champion.
She later became the first ever Strikeforce Bantamweight champion defeating the previously never submitted Marloes Coenen by arm-triangle submission in the fourth round.

In her first title defense, Tate would meet the woman who would turn out to be her biggest career rival, Ronda Rousey.
Rousey earned a title fight by winning two fights in Strikeforce prior and submitted Tate in the first round with her patented armbar.

Tate next received a contract with the UFC after they purchased the Strikeforce organization. Tate would actually lose her UFC debut to Cat Zingano, but was granted a title shot versus Rousey, which she again lost, but in the third round by submission.
Since her last loss, Tate has put together an impressive four fight win streak and will next fight Holly Holm at UFC 196 for the Women’s Bantamweight Championship.
