Swords were the weapon of choice for a good chunk of human history but nowadays aren’t very common weapons. However, when compared to knives, dealing with a sword wielding attacker is a completely different thing that self-defense expert and former bouncer Nick Drossos breaks down in the following video.
One of the few advantages you have against a sword is they are very bulky weapons and not easy to conceal. As long as you are aware of your surrounding you or someone else should usually be able to spot a sword-wielding attacker long before they get close to you to use it which brings us to Nick’s first point before we even start to break down the defense. RUN!
Running is always the first step when someone has a weapon and you do not. Why risk it? Just run and call for help.
If running isn’t an option though, Nick explains that the sword is a very rangy, powerful weapon. You have to keep much farther away compared to a regular knife and time your charge very carefully and look to grab the weapon arm.

Also, Nick explains to use whatever makeshift item is at your disposal to create an opportunity to either close the distance but always the first priority is to run away.
