In street or self defense situations head butts are a pretty common move that can really do some damage. The forehead is actually quite thick bone and ramming it into someone’s face can end a fight immediately as well as knock some teeth out or easily break a nose.
So how do you defend yourself from one of these type of attacks? The following video from popular martial arts channel ‘Fight Science’ breaks it down for us.
Ideally you want to simply move out of range as you have to be pretty close to someone to head butt them. Awareness is also important here too, for instance don’t let an aggressive person get close enough to you to head butt you.

The fight science guy also talks about keeping your hands up which is essential as well as ‘framing’ where you put your arm up to prevent someone from getting too close.
Also while you are framing with your one arm you still have another arm free which can be used to throw strikes of your own such as body strikes and elbows.
The most important thing here however is to not let anyone in your personal space, and likewise getting in someone’s face during a confrontation is never a good idea as you are making yourself wide open for the head butt. Likewise, on the other hand do not let someone get in your face either and simply move away, always keeping hands up to defend yourself.
