Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen had a highly anticipated MMA fight at Bellator 170 on January 21, 2017. Many people don’t know however that these guys had a long-standing history from back in the day when they were both competing on the college wrestling circuit.
Even though both must have been in the same weight class at the time, it is quite clear that Ortiz is the much larger framed man. That doesn’t stop Sonnen from pretty much dominating this match from start to finish with superior skill and ability.
Notice both of their stances early on the match. Sonnen is much lower to the ground before he shoots in for what looks like an ankle pick (or low single leg takedown) that puts Ortiz on his back.

Ortiz then grabs a hold of Sonnen’s leg and uses it to briefly get back to his feet, where the two lock up in a greco-type clinch. Sonnen then quite impressively tosses Ortiz to the ground like a rag doll from a head-and-arm, throw and it doesn’t take long after that before he gets the pin.
Ortiz later spoke out about this embarrassing loss from back in the day and how much it affected him. Another interesting tidbit is that this decisive loss took place on Ortiz’s birthday, making it that much worse.
