The former face of women’s MMA, Gina Carano, recently commented on what’s next for the next former face of women’s MMA, Ronda Rousey.
I think Ronda should do whatever she wants to do,” said Carano. “She’s only 29. She’s an amazing athlete but she needs to express herself as an artist, too. So let her do what she wants to do and just follow along her journey and support her.
Then UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier took a contrarian stance on that advice.
“Gina Carano, who are you to tell Ronda Rousey what to do,” he said. “If I have to look back on your career, and your choosing to act over fighting and continuing to fight, I don’t feel as though … that the career has not been what it would have been if she stayed fight. Ronda – DON’T LISTEN.”
Carano was not impressed with the remarks.
“If you knew me and what I’ve been through to get to where I am, I genuinely think you’d be ashamed of your words,” said Carano to TMZ Sports. “All the best.”
Cormier was not ashamed.
You know what I like about this? That’s the Gina Carano that I know and love. She’s fiery! You see how she’s fired up? She’s like a fighter.
My whole thing was this – when Gina Carano was dealt really bad adversity in fighting, she left. So I’m talking about her in terms of fighting. She can’t advise Ronda in terms of fighting, because when it got tough, she left. It’s not in my character to walk away whenever things get tough. So I’m saying, ‘Why does that opinion matter? We don’t want Ronda to do what you did, because you left!’
“But that’s the Gina Carano I tuned into Showtime to watch every Saturday. The fiery Gina Carano, the girl that’s showing some gumption. Maybe I’ll piss her off enough that she goes, ‘You know what, I’m gonna go and fight again and prove to this dude that I didn’t run away from the sport.’
What if Gina is still damaged from the Cyborg fight? And because I brought that up, she got upset? I was within my right. I have an open forum – that’s my TV show, UFC Tonight, every Wednesday on FS1 at 6 o’clock Pacific, I get to share my opinion. I am entitled to it.
I like this one, this Gina Carano. She’s fired up.
