In a recent message on his social network, Corbbrey detailed a wild incident from his past, and the shocking realization that brought it to the fore. It centers on a Dojo Storm.
“Three years ago this guy called my gym talking real reckless, saying he wanted to fight whoever was at the gym,” began the coach. “This was on a Saturday, so I had the phones forwarded to my cell, and was actually on the way to the gym to train one of my athletes. He was making the call from my gym parking lot, and said that he was here to fight, so I told him I would be pulling up shortly. When I get there, he hops out and immediately start blabbing.
“I tell him that we are a fighters’ gym, and beg him to just chill, and come try a class on Monday. I tell him that being a street fighter will not help him and he responds, ‘when I beat your ass will I still be a street fighter?’ With that being said, I made him sign a waiver, grabbed two pair of MMA gloves beat him up, choked him unconscious, and told him to get the f*** out of my gym.
“I found out today that he was arrested for multiple sexual assaults. I should have beat him up a lot worse.”

WHAT IS A DOJO STORM?
The advent of mixed martial arts has largely stemmed the practice, as evidenced by Corbbrey trying to instead steer Tallent to a class. However, Dojo Storming was a thing in martial arts for many generations. Called Dojoyaburi in Japanese, the practice of dojo storming has a history in the land of the rising sun extending back to ancient times, and is considered by some to be part of the samurai lifestyle. The Kodokan school of judo was intently involved with Dojoyaburi during its early years, and there were karate practitioners who engaged in it as well.
When the Kodokan sent out representatives globally, one of them, Mitsuyo Maeda, carried that spirit to Brazil, where it was widely practiced by the Gracie family. When Rorion Gracie came to the United States, it didn’t stop. When Art Davie witnessed dojo storming at Rorion’s academy, it was the inspiration for the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
There have also been great lows; the nadir happened in 1970. John Keehan had ads in the back of every comic book at the time, offering, under the name of Count Dante, to share his deadly martial arts secrets. Keehan, a fellow black belt named Jim Koncevic, and three students stormed the Green Dragon Society’s Black Cobra Hall in Chicago. In the ensuing melee, Koncevic was killed with a traditional martial arts weapon. The incident lived on in infamy, as an example of what not to do.
However, sometimes a dojo storm still has a positive ending, like a creep facing sex crime charges getting beaten down handily. Check out more Dojo Storm stories at mixedmartialarts, com.
